This week, I've been freshening up my grammar skills and I gotta say, I am having a blast!

I recently found this awesome site, -grammar-monster.com and I really like it! It is for kids, but I think grown ups can learn a lot from it. There is nothing wrong with going back to the basics! You would be surprised to find out just how much of that stuff you don't know or have forgotten over the years.

Like I said the other day, if you haven't been in a classroom in a while and haven't had someone to guide you, it's easy to forget everything you were taught back then.

I'm not only re-learning what I use to know all those years ago, I'm learning new things as well. English has always been my favorite subject, but I was mostly interested in the vocabulary part of it and I really just wanted to write.

I didn't like having to sit in the same spot for too long and I didn't enjoy listening to the teacher ramble on and on about things like verbs, nouns, adjectives, punctuation etc. At the time, all of that stuff seemed pointless.

I didn't like being told what to write, I always wanted to do my own thing and I'm still the same way, maybe not quite as stubborn. I like having the freedom to choose the subject I want to write about and write the way I am most comfortable, I am most comfortable writing from the heart. Teachers don't always give you that freedom. I understand they have a curriculum that they want students to follow and some of it you have to follow in order to graduate.

I do wish I would have paid attention more though...

Shoulda, coulda, woulda...right?

There was a lot we were not taught though, important stuff that I think we really needed to know, like history, government and real world stuff. We all had different disabilities some were more severe, but we were all put in the same category and I don't think we were challenged enough. They didn't really prepare us for life after graduation. I think there were plenty of us in the class who could have handled the more advanced stuff. I think not being challenged enough also had a lot to do with my boredom.

A lot of the content on this grammar site is stuff I was not taught, a lot of it is new to me. So, I guess that means I'm not smarter than a 5th grader, huh?

I'm just starting with the basics, though some of it is a refresher. I have always worked on my grammar skills, but it's been a while and I do tend to forget after a while. I just need to be more consistent.

I have been spending at least 3 or 4 hours a day, sometimes longer, studying whatever subject I am on. I don't mean 3 or 4 hours straight, I split it up. I won't pick more than 3 subjects at a time and I'm rotating subjects also, because I tend to get bored if I spend too much time on a certain subject.

At the moment I am studying 2 subjects grammar and human anatomy. Why am I studying human anatomy? for a very good reason! I'll be telling you more about that later this week!

Your post title is probably the most important part of your post. It's what helps a reader decide whether or not it's worth reading. I struggle terribly with this! In fact, I think coming up with the perfect title is the hardest part!

There are always the classics, the ones you have seen a million times on multiple blogs and in different magazines as well. For example; "Lady In Red", "the Little Black Dress", "Pink Is the New Black". I think we all use the classics from time to time, but it's also good to come up with your own catchy titles and that is not an easy task!

I think the majority of the titles I've seen in blog posts and magazine articles have been used many times. You don't always have to re-invent the wheel.

I always love the titles that are used in magazines, especially fashion editorials. They often use song titles, idioms, and I always love when they put their own clever little twist to them.

For those of you who have a hard time coming up with titles for your posts: I've been experimenting and I have found something that has really helped me. I am going to give it a few more weeks and see how it goes and then I will let you know all about it and maybe it will help you with your title troubles!

In the meantime, here is some Q & A for fellow bloggers and writers...

Q & A

How do you come up with your titles?

What do you do when you get stuck and can't think of a good title to use?

Do you come up with title first or do you wait until you have finished the post or article?

~skylarmagazine.sarah@gmail.com-Facebook-Twitter-Pinterest~

Typos don't bother me too much and I don't mind a little swearing or a little slang here and there. Some of it is cute, some of it is just so lame! I love when people are inventive with words, but I also appreciate good grammar and proper English.

I'm not saying you have to have perfect grammar or perfect writing skills and I'm not talking about people who have speech impairments or other disabilities, nor am I referring to individuals from foreign countries. I understand there are some folks who can't help it and many are still learning the English language.

By the way disability does not mean dumb! There are plenty of highly intelligent individuals who are disabled, many even more so than those who are not. Many of the worlds most genius and most influential Icons had disabilities...Albert Einstein, Sir Isaac Newton, Alexander Graham Bell, Walt Disney, George Washington and painters such as Van Gogh and da Vinci.

Stupidity however, is not a disability! It is a choice!

I've often said "you can't fix stupid", but realistically, yes you can! Playing video games and being fried all day is not going to fix it! You need to read a book and get out of the house and talk to people once in a while.

And, there is this thing that has words and their definitions in it, what's that thing called? Ummm...I believe it's called a dictionary! DUH!!!

You can always try dictionary.com and thesaurus.com, they are free!

Read the Wikepedia, they cover just about every subject imaginable! Gain some knowledge!  It doesn't have to be boring, Learning is fun!

I cannot stand when I go to a blog and the whole thing is nothing but slang and every other word is the "F-word"! I'm not trying to tell people how to write or how to run their blogs, if that's your style and you are happy with it, so-be-it! I know I don't have to read it and most of the time I don't. I think it just depends on what your goals are and the kind of impression you want to make on people.

But, when you are out in public, please be considerate of the people around you. If there is a child close by, don't use offensive language and understand that our senior citizens don't want to hear it!

If you want people to take you seriously and respect you as a blogger or a writer, my advice is, don't be a potty mouth! Especially, if you are trying to get sponsors! Try not to go too overboard with the slang and it should never be used more than the English vocabulary! In other words, good grammar trumps slang...AAIIGHT???

The English vocabulary is still so beautiful: when it is used the way it is suppose to be used! I'm just not hearing it as often. I can't believe the stuff I see, hear and read these days!

Seriously...people need to chill out on that nasty "C" word! I have said it myself and I'm not proud of it. I don't use it very often, when I do that means I'm -excuse my French-, really pissed off! I do not like that word though! It really is gross!

Don't get me wrong, slang can be a lot of fun and when I'm a little liquored up, I can cuss like a sailor! However, back in the day, there was always a time and place for that kind of talk. Today, there seems to be no boundaries.

Maybe that's just how I was raised. When our elders were present, we did not say those words, because we knew they did not like it and we respected them. My grandparents hated the "F-Word"! I heard my grandma say that word one time and I was shocked! She was probably, I'd say...78 and it just came out of nowhere! I think that was probably the first and only time she had ever used it.

When we went out in public, to a restaurant or where ever we would go, I automatically knew to act and speak like a lady. They never even had to tell me. I just knew. Slang and the occasional swearing only happened when the adults were having cocktails and got a little tootled, and it was usually very minor like "damn" or "shit". Grandma did say "shit" a lot, and "oh...bull crap!" She was pretty feisty. Still, she made those words sound so elegant!

I never once swore in front of my grandparents! I think we always knew that even though the adults did it, the kids did not. That's just the way it was. It was adult talk and usually when they cursed, they were slip-ups that us kids weren't suppose to hear.

Times are a changin'...the things that come out of the mouths of the youngsters today, is pretty appalling. I mean...I've heard things come from some young ladies mouths that were so raunchy...even the Osbourne's would be appalled!

It's not just swearing though...

Thanks to shows like "Laguna Beach", "The Hills", and those dang Kardashian's..."valley girl" talk is no longer just a California thing. It's every where!

And, it is like, so totally annoying when people talk like that!

I admit, I watched "Laguna Beach" and "The Hills", and I was bummed when they ended.

Anywho...the raunch, the birdbrained babble and the haughty attitudes are ruining the English language and it makes me sad. I think it's time we clean it up a bit, don't you?

I'm not perfect, I make mistakes and slang can be fun like I said. When I'm out with friends, after a few or more adult beverages, when the judgment is clouded and the mind has gone numb, our language can get pretty colorful. It's only natural for that to happen, when your inhibitions are lowered. Nobody is going to remember what you say anyway. Right?

What was it Dr. Sheldon Cooper -"Big Bang Theory"- said is the prize at the bottom of every vodka bottle? The answer is; Memory impairment!

Thank goodness for that huh?

And honestly, I do have a little "valley girl" in me too. I say things like "totally" and the occasional "like" or "duh", andmy personal favorite "seriously?". I just don't use them all in the same sentence and I know my limits.

I also "heart" things sometimes, maybe a little more than I should. It annoyed the heck out of me when people first started using that phrase! When I heard it on "the Hills", I was so tempted to throw the remote through the TV.  Then one day, out of the blue, not sure exactly when or where it happened, I said "I hearted" something. That's when I realized I needed to stop watching that junk. But, did I stop? Heck no! I was addicted!

Those shows were like crack! I watched it once and then I was hooked. I'm assuming most people don't smoke crack for the taste, not that I would know what crack tastes like, it sounds pretty nasty to me. That's how I felt about those shows though, I didn't watch it because I liked the people or their vocabulary. I just got sucked into it and they did have cute clothes.

I use to swear a lot until I worked at the daycare. We couldn't use that kind of language around the kids, so I cut back on swearing a lot. I think there were some occasional slip-ups, but truthfully, the kids actually swore more than I did! I had a 2 year old once call me a "b*t@h", and he also dropped the F-bomb a few times.

Cussing is necessary sometimes though. Sometimes you just can't help it, for me it's a good stress reliever. When you are out having a good time, that's when it's time to let loose, have some laughs and get things off your chest. Just try to save that colorful language for the bar or where ever you go to have your fun. You just gotta know your limits and the appropriate place and time to use it.

I just don't like hearing trashy, vulgar language 24:7. I don't want our good grammar to be gone and lost forever!

...Tip...
*Read and use the dictionary daily, maybe the thesaurus as well. Pick 1-5 random words each day. Whether they are words you aren't familiar with or words you already know, study their definitions, synonyms and antonyms. Search for example sentences and then try writing your own.

You could even do a word of the day and try to use it throughout the day. Even though it might be a word you know, read the definition anyway. A lot of people know certain words, but don't necessarily know the exact definition. It's just a good exercise for the mind and great for writer's block too!

I do this twice a day. I do it first thing in the morning when I wake up and then at night before bed. It's a good way to get yourself moving and thinking, and it will get those creative juices flowing. It is also a great way to wind down before bed.

...Q&A...

What are your thoughts on swearing? Do you do it? Do you let your kids swear or do you have rules about that in your home? What kind of discipline do you use when your child swears?

What are your thoughts on grammar and the way young people talk today?

If you had a business or blog and you were considering sponsoring, would you want to sponsor a blog that has too much swearing? Would you sponsor a blog that has any swearing at all? What are your thoughts on this subject?

~{by 3 Lambs Illustration, Source}~

At this particular point in my life, I have no intentions of ever getting plastic surgery, but I can't and won't say I never will. I'm only 34, I don't know what I'm going to look like 10, 20, 30 years from now. I could very well change my mind by then. Unfortunate things such as accidents do happen and plastic surgery may be required. Hopefully, it won't ever come down to anything like that, but things do happen. You never know. Plastic surgery is sometimes necessary.

I have a few bad habits that could potentially lead to going under the knife some day. For instance, I hardly ever wear sunglasses and I'm starting to regret not wearing them! It's not that I don't want to, it's just that money is really tight right now and I haven't been able to invest in a pair. In order to drive I'm going to have to wear perscription glasses and sunglasses, I would rather wait and spend the money on those.

Sunglasses are a necessity! You really do need to protect your eyes, not just to avoid wrinkles, but also to protect them from those harmful UV Rays. The sun is so bright, even in the winter! If you aren't careful it can damage your eyes.

I need to take my own advice!

When I am out in the sun, I squint and squinting has caused a wrinkle, not just a wrinkle, but a dented wrinkle, right smack dab in the center of the T-zone! I've noticed a few small wrinkles in my forehead also. Not cool! Not cool at all!

There is another habit that I am ashamed to admit I have. I am a smoker. I started smoking 15 years ago. I am currently trying to kick this nasty habit, I wish I never picked up. A few weeks ago I started keeping a journal and I was trying to ween myself off of them and I was actually doing pretty good.

Well, I guess the saying is true -all good things must come to an end-. There have been some stressful events and instead of smoking less, I'm smoking more.

There are some things I am dealing with at the moment, nothing serious by any means, but I've decided right now is definitely not the best time for me to quit! I'm getting through it and once it has passed, I will start over and then I will kick the habit for good! Bye, bye cigarettes!

If you are a non-smoker, it may seem like an excuse, but until you know what it's like to be a smoker and have been smoking for at least 10 years or longer, trust me! You have no idea how hard it is to stop! Honestly, it sucks!

Anyway, that's a whole other topic that I will blog more about later. For now, let's focus on what this post is really about.

Smoking does not help the aging process! If I don't quit there will be consequences. I'm starting to see the damage in my skin already, if I am not careful, I might have to have Botox and I'm not a fan of that stuff!

Supposedly, there are some benefits to Botox. It's suppose to treat muscle spasms and other conditions, I'm sure it could be beneficial, if it were being used for those reasons. But, let's get real, why do most people get Botox? I highly doubt it's for muscle spasms. My guess and this is just a guess, they are doing it to look younger, but it doesn't always work out that way, does it?

It's not a one time thing either. The injections only last about 6 months. Once you start, you really can't stop and it's going to cost you a pretty penny. I really don't want to replace one bad expensive habit with another. Plus, it causes paralysis in your face, I don't think I would care for that. Although, after a few Butterscotch Schnapps cocktails, I can't feel my face or my legs and I don't mind that so much. I'll feel it in the morning though and that's not fun!

For the most part, I'm not a "never say never" kind of person. Unless, it has to do with drugs or something seriously dangerous or stupid. Anyway, I don't think exactly the same way I did 15 years ago.

When I was 18, I wanted to get a tattoo, the reason I never ended up getting one is because I couldn't afford to get inked. It's expensive! If I hadn't been broke, I would have done it, in a heartbeat! Back then I thought I would never regret doing it. There were a lot of things I did back then that I thought I wouldn't regret later on. I was wrong!

I'm glad I couldn't afford to get tramp stamped. I know had I gone through with it, I would hate it now. One thing's for sure, I will never get a tattoo, that's a given!

From what I've heard from others, it's even more expensive, not to mention much more painful, to get them taken off! That just doesn't even seem worth it to me. Plus, I really don't like needles! I wish people would seriously think before they ink! You say you won't regret it, but the truth is, you probably will.

Plastic surgery and tattoos are kind of the same, they both entail altering your appearance. However, unless you are a twin or a triplet and your parents give you a tiny tattoo so they can tell you apart from your siblings, tattoos are a choice. Whereas, plastic surgery isn't always a choice, though, there are a lot of people who do choose to go under the knife and some a little too much.

I don't think it should be done unless it is absolutely necessary. I can't stand to see a woman ruin her good looks with Botox, Lip Injections and all of that other stuff she has done to herself. Especially, when they are already drop-dead-gorgeous. You know the saying, "if it aint broke, don't fix it". It is so true. Just look at the top of the post. She did not need to do any of that stuff to herself! She was a naturally beautiful girl! What was she thinking?

You would think women would learn from the mistakes those beautiful women in Hollywood have made. Not to say they are superior, but they have all that money, one would think they would be able to find a surgeon who could undo the damage the last one did to them. NOPE!

Instead it gets worse and worse, every time they go under the knife. That should be an eye opener for all of us. If it didn't work for Meg Ryan or Pamela Anderson or other famous women in Hollywood, what makes you think it's going to work for you?

Don't get me wrong. I'm sure there are some amazing surgeons out there whose work is magical. I'm sure there are women in Hollywood who have had a little nip/tuck that we aren't aware of. Those are the kind of plastic surgeons I would think most people would want. You want the ones who can make your surgery less obvious or better yet, totally discreet. Right?

If you are considering cosmetic surgery, before proceeding, do as much research as possible and really think it through. Don't just look for information, look for results. Look at pictures of other people who have had the same thing done, is that what you really want to look like?

Also, not all flaws are flaws, they are unique traits that make you, you. Not all flaws are meant to be fixed and many of our flaws are minor and can easily be fixed with makeup. I think it's important to know that there is not enough plastic surgery in the world that is going to create the perfect you. There is no such thing! It could have the opposite effect and may cause more damage and more flaws that you will be unhappy with.

Chances are if perfection is your goal, you will never be satisfied and you will just keep going until there is nothing left for your plastic surgeon to do and there will be no way to fix it.

So, is it really worth it?

...Q & A...

Have you ever had plastic surgery? If so how many procedures and what did you have done? Were you happy with the results? What advice would you give to someone who is considering cosmetic surgery?

If you haven't, would you ever go under the knife? If you answered yes, what procedure would you opt for and why?

My punctuation skills are far from perfect, but it's not something I've ever really struggled with, at least not severely. Lately however, I have been experiencing some punctuation problems and I'm currently working on correcting them.

It's not about perfection, I make mistakes and I will make plenty more of them throughout my life. I am only human and part of being human is making lots and lots of mistakes!

I have no intentions of changing my eclectic writing style. I go with the flow, I write according to my mood or whatever the subject is. My style is different, not everyone is going to appreciate it, that's okay! I know who I am, I know what kind of writer I am and like I said, I have no intentions of changing that.

I would just like to improve in some areas, I want to develop better writing skills, I want to continue to learn and grow, so people will respect me and take me seriously as a writer. At the same time, writing is a fun and often therapeutic way for me to express myself. I love being able to write about the people, places and things I love and it's never a chore. If it became more like a chore, I would no longer enjoy it. I do not want that to happen!

My punctuation problems started earlier this year. What happens is I'll get halfway through a sentence or I'll get to the end of a sentence and I get stuck, I draw a big blank and it takes forever to figure out what to put there.  Does it need a comma? Should I end it with a period or an exclamation point? It's been frustrating, because I've never had problems with this before. I don't know what's going on!

I know a question always ends with a question mark and for the most part I do know how to use a period, but it can be tricky! Usually, when I'm expressing something exciting or want to get a point across I'll use the exclamation point, I believe that's the way it's suppose to be used. Sometimes I do get stumped though. I don't always know the appropriate time to use it.

And then there's that pesky comma! That has to be my least favorite of all the typographical symbols! It is so annoying! I've noticed I've been putting it in places where it doesn't belong. I apologize for that. I just get so frustrated with it! Sometimes I just decide to not use it at all, I really need to get out of the habit of doing that though. I know it's an important symbol.

It's as if I'm starting to forget everything I learned fifteen years ago in school, but I've been writing since I was 7 years old and I have never stopped. I write every day! One would think my mind would be sharper.

I suppose it is possible to forget what you were taught in school, if you haven't been in a classroom in years and you don't have someone to show you how to solve math problems or use proper punctuation. Plus, there isn't as much discipline. I think you tend to work harder when there is more pressure and you have someone grading you.

I've been very lucky. Everyone has been so understanding and supportive. I've only dealt with a few harsh critics in the 9 years I've been doing this. People can be overly critical. There are some people who assume you are stupid if you make more than a few mistakes. That's simply not true!

There are a lot of brilliant writers who make tons of mistakes! Not all amazing writers have the best grammar and they might struggle with things such as punctuation, but that doesn't mean they are stupid or untalented.

Anyway, sorry for all the typos. I just wanted you all to know that I am aware of my mistakes and I am working on them.

...Q & A...

What are your writing/blogging flaws? Spelling? Grammar? Punctuation? Are there any that you had, that you were able to correct, if so what were they and what did you do to fix them?

A great way to contribute is to guest blog! I'm always looking for guest bloggers and we cover just about every subject, so you can pretty much write and submit posts about anything!

I am currently looking for people to guest blog about our current theme, which is "dreams and aspirations" and there is so much you can do with this theme!

Not sure what to write about?

...Here are some ideas that might inspire you...

Childhood Dreams and Aspirations

*When you were a kid what did you want to be when you grew up? A movie star? A famous singer? An Astronaut? Did you want to be in the ballet? Or did you want to be like the fictional characters from books, tv, or movies? Did you grow out of it or do you still have the same dreams and aspirations? Some people don't, there are people who end up pursuing the dreams they had during childhood.

*You could write a post about kids and their dreams and aspirations. It could be your own kids or about any child you know, or about kids in general. I'm always so inspired by the child's imagination, I'm inspired by children in general.  Some of those dreams and aspirations they have, might not be as far-fetched as you might think.

A lot of kids want to be like their favorite superheros, they may not grow up to be "Spiderman" or "Superman", but they could end up in a career that involves protecting people or saving lives.

Ambitious Dreamers

There are dreamers and then there are ambitious dreamers. Dreamers only dream about what they want, while the ambitious dreamers go after what they want. You could write a post all about the ambitious dreamers you know, who are currently pursuing their dreams and aspirations. Or, you could write about the ambitious dreamers who worked their butts off and succeeded because of the hard work and dedication they put into it.

Ambition

Ambition is a diverse subject, there is a lot you can do with it.

*You can write about ambition and what it is.

*You can write about what it means to be ambitious or how to become more ambitious.

*You can write about an ambitious individual you know or admire.

*It could be related to love and even sex. You could write about being ambitious in bed or how to be a more ambitious lover.

*It could also be fashion or beauty related. Write about ambitious fashion statements or ambitious fashionista's you know or write about your own ambitious style.

Ambition is about taking chances and being bold. Don't be afraid to think outside of the box.

Success

Success is also a diverse subject. You can write about the subject itself or you can write about something more specific such as...

*A successful individual. In the post you can talk about how the individual became successful, what it took for that person to get to where he or she is today.

*How to become successful.

*How to become a successful blogger, or how to turn you blog into a success.

*An achievement- something you have accomplished that you are proud of and want to boast about.

*The struggles and hard work it takes in order to become a successful blogger or entrepreneur.

Again, think outside of the box!

Goals

*You can write about your own goals or you could do a how to post about creating goals, working towards them and achieving them.

*Create a bucket list and show readers how to create their own bucket lists. A guest post like this could lead to follow up posts, so you can let the readers know about the progress you have made.

Dreams

*Your post doesn't necessarily have to be about a dream career. It could be about your dream house, dream car, dream vacation, dream wedding, or your dream lover or spouse.

*You could write about the strange dream you had last night or it could be about a pleasant dream you had recently. One of those dreams you didn't want to end or one of those dreams that you couldn't wake up from, because something or someone was pinning you down. I hate those!

*If you are into dream interpretation, you could do a post related to dream interpretation. You could ask readers to share their dreams with them and you could analyze them. It could be a two-parter, you can interpret your own dreams in one post and then have readers ask you to interpret theirs and then do so in part 2. It could be just for fun or if this is something you are an expert in, that would be fun too.

It's a very diverse theme, the possibilities are endless! It doesn't have to be anything I mentioned above, I'd love to hear your ideas as well.

For the past several months we have been doing a color inspiration theme. Our power color has been yellow for a while now. While I was revamping, I got a little side-tracked, but I have been incorporating it in a lot of my posts. I also used it as one of the main colors of the new layout, since it is one of the hottest colors of the season.

I intend to keep the current layout until the end of summer and then I will switch to Autumn hues, by the beginning of September.

At the moment, Kaylah is on hiatus and Sara has also been pretty busy this summer as well. So, Tabbie is the only one available to take on any assignments.

Eventually, we will be moving on to our next power color, but I have decided to put the color inspiration thing on hold, while Tabbie works on her assignments and so she can get some pictures done for the next power color.

...Our next three power colors are going to be...

Green, Blue and Purple.

Dreams and aspirations is the other theme we have been covering. I'm going to keep the theme until the beginning of August and then we will be moving on to something new.

Our next theme is going to be "fame". I've already started blogging about this subject. The fame related posts were a bit of a sneak peak, I guess.

You can still contribute content for the current theme "dreams and aspirations", but you are also welcome to start contributing content for our next 3 power colors and also our upcoming theme "fame".

Throughout the week, I am going to be posting opportunities and you will be given the option to contribute content. So, be sure to check back for those!

~Please Excuse the Mess!~

Pinned Image

Last week I got all of the pages finished, yay! Anyway, all of the links on the Skylar Stuff and Models pages are correct so, you can just use those to navigate, for now. However, on several of the other pages, the links are all messed up! I just wanted to let you all know, in case you try to click on a link and it takes you to a page that doesn't exist. I should have them all fixed by the end of the week!

~Watch Me!~

Yesterday I  paid tribute to "the greatest entertainer who ever lived", the woman who inspired me to want to be a "star". That woman was, Judy Garland. I think we can all relate to Frances Ethel Gumm, in some ways, or perhaps you can relate to her in many ways.

Though, my childhood wasn't horrible, it wasn't always pleasant. Growing up is a challenging and awkward experience for most adolescents.

Middle School was harsh! I was so miserable! I was extremely shy, some of my classes were mainstream and I rarely ever spoke in those classes, because I was so uncomfortable around the other students. I never raised my hand and I hated when the teachers would call on me!

I was physically awkward also. I had bad teeth, severe acne and my hair was always a mess! It was so stringy and always had static, it was as if I rubbed a gazillion balloons on my head before school. YIKES! I tried everything to fix it and nothing ever worked! The products that are available today are so much better than what we had back then!

It was not fun, not fun at all! I was an "ugly duckling" and it was pointed out to me on several occasions. I was called every name in the book -retard, stupid, you name it!

It was tough, but somehow I managed to stay strong and I got through it. I knew it would all be over soon enough. I just focused on my future and what I had to look forward to. People knocked my dreams, but it didn't discourage me. I was determined to prove them all wrong. It didn't matter if it was a teacher, a fellow student, or something I read in a magazine, I was not going to let anyone get in the way of my dreams and aspirations!

People often underestimate the disabled. Some individuals are physically and mentally challenged and have lots of special needs. However, not all those who are "physically" challenged are "mentally" challenged and although they may have needs, they can still think and do a lot of stuff on their own. Whether you are disabled or not, we all have challenges and we all have needs.

Some people can't walk or drive, some can't feed or bathe themselves and there are some individuals who don't have feeling in certain parts of their bodies. Some can't see, hear or speak, while others stutter or have short attention spans. And, then there are those who are like me who just struggle in certain subjects such as reading or math.

What many people don't understand is, we are still human, we still have rights and we do have feelings. We also have common sense, we know right from wrong. We aren't stupid!

When you point, stare, laugh, or make fun, we are well aware of it. We cry, we laugh, we get angry and we get hurt, just like everybody else does.

Regardless of what our challenges might be, we share a lot of the same qualities. We are ambitious, courageous and optimistic. We have hopes, dreams and aspirations. When we want something, we strive for it and we won't let anyone or anything stand in our way! We are fighters! We reach for the stars and we go the distance! Why?

Because we can!

Do you have a disability or know anyone who does? If yes tell me about it. What was it like growing up and/or dealing with your challenges?
